Elliott Smith | An Introduction

The man I’m about to introduce needs no introduction…Elliott Smith.  My ironic contradiction plays on the title of Smith’s newest release and is a monumental fake out for those who would wish for a real introduction to the genius behind this compilation of hits.  Plagued in life by depression and addiction, Smith famously, or infamously, took his own life* in October of 2003. Lenny Kravitz | Let Love Rule (feat. Justice)

I have mixed feelings about Lenny Kravitz’ music, but this awesomely creative video, featuring the likes of Justice, puts all that trepidation in check…for at least 4 minutes, 9 seconds.  This gem from 2009 kicks off with a rooftop duel featuring what appears to be Marty McFly capping David Carradine* right between the eyes in order to save his babe.  Super sweet. Dan Black | Symphonies

Taken from his debut album, ((UN)), “Symphonies” has thus far been the score to Dan Black’s red carpet rise stateside.  A beneficiary of the iTunes “Free Single of the Week” over a year ago, he’s still gaining momentum.  An alternative version of the song, featuring KiD CuDi (who seems to be on a level of ubiquity just shy of Nicky Minaj or God) was also released as a bonus track on the album, furthering his street cred.  Who knows, maybe there’s a Kanye collabo in the future…or even a Bieber remix! Sweden’s sugar-pop princess of synth danze tracks, Robyn delivered a critically acclaimed triple-feature, Body Talk, throughout 2010.  First came Pt. 1 in June, followed by Pt. 2 in September.  Finally in November, the label essentially smashed the two together, pasted on some new album art on the cover and sold that shit to you again, saving you the troubled of creating a new playlist on your iPod*.  Thank you, Cherrytree records. Kanye West | Runaway

The always demure and understated Kanye West (*choke*) has done it again.  After the wildly successful “G.O.O.D. Fridays” marketing campaign, where he systematically dropped new tracks from his latest album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, the full release finally came on November 22, just in time for Thanksgiving with the family. Do you ever have that dream where you’re lying upwards on the couch and Ratatat is killing it underneath the cushions while a veritable Mardi Gras is blowin’ up your spot but you can’t even figure out why the front door is really on the back of the couch with a Phantom of the Opera Gondola settin’ sail to the kitchen for more milk to spill out the window Continue Reading

Never Too Late | Conan’s Return

1 Comment 12 | November | 2010

In the sixteen years that he hosted The Late Show on NBC, Conan O’Brien usurped the former Governator’s fictional character as theee Conan in the entertainment industry.  Steadily developing a cult following over the course of his decade-plus at the network, his dedication to NBC paid off in 2009 when it was announced he would be the successor to the throne of late night, The Tonight Show.  However, it wasn’t long after his crowning (ha ha….crowning) that the 6’-4” redhead darling of late night became the recipient of NBC’s version of the shirt-over-the-head career sucker punch of a lifetime.  Continue Reading
