On their upcoming release, Expo 86, the guys of Wolf Parade only turn back the clock as far as the title and cover art are concerned. Perhaps the proximity of my hometown, Olympia, WA, is the only reason I vaguely recall the hype surrounding the World Exposition on Transportation and Communication in Vancouver, Canada; year 1986. Nevertheless, the title conjured fond memories and so does the music. Tweaking the tricks perfected At Mount Zoomer, Spencer Krug and Co. roll out an unmistakably wolf-y, and highly parade-y tune here. Backed by The Drum Beat*, Spencer’s signature wavering vocals deliver classics like,
“I don’t think I should say sorry/For things I do in dreams/Some people live like they’re falling/Some people die in their sleep.”
I’m not one to preach but given the two options, I’d recommend living like you’re falling. The alternative is much, Much, MUCH more boring.
*Bass, Hi-hat, Snare, Hi-hat, repeat…until crowd head-bobbing has reached 110% participation.
